Easy Microwave Popcorn

Thanks to the wonders of the World Wide Web, my family and I have found an easy way to make great-tasting, inexpensive, low-calorie popcorn. I just wish we’d discovered it before we bought our air popper.

I’ve seen this idea on several blogs, so I’m not going to try to link to where I saw it first since I really don’t remember. Suffice it to say, this isn’t an original idea, but a good one!

All you need is:

  • 1/4 cup popcorn kernels
  • A paper lunch bag
  • Tape
  • seasonings

Just place 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels in a paper lunch sack, fold the lid down a couple of times, tape it shut and you’re ready to go. You can just toss it in the microwave, taped side up, and pop just like regular microwave popcorn, minus all the fat and calories from butter and flavorings.

We’ve discovered a tasty addition that adds a few calories, but the improvement in taste is worth it to us…even me. I add 1/2 tsp. of Orville Redenbacher’s Popcorn Oil. It’s 120 calories for a tablespoon, so only 60 for a half and I’d say that at least half of that winds up soaked into the bag, so I don’t think you’re adding all that many calories.

I pour the oil into the bag before popping the corn in the microwave. Shake it up a bit to coat the kernels, then fold over, tape and microwave as normal.

We add popcorn salt and Butter Buds when it’s finished popping for a quick, tasty snack. The only slight drawback is that you can’t make a huge amount of popcorn at once (or it sticks together in clumps like a popcorn ball inside the bag…ask me how I know). However, it’s the perfect snack size for one or two people. It’s also filling with no guilt.
