Preserving Race Bibs

Okay, never mind the fact that, a few weeks ago, I didn’t know what a racing bib was. (It’s the number that you wear when you run.) Now, I have two of them and I really didn’t just want to throw them away. Those bibs represent a long, hard road from obesity to fitness and the accomplishment of something I didn’t think I could do. No way are they just going in the trash.

Brian gave me a suggestion for what to do with them, passed along from a co-worker: frame them!

I loved the idea!

I didn’t want to just throw them in a frame, though, because I’m thinking that, in a few years, I’ll have a bunch of them and I want to remember the details. So, I made a mat to which to attach each of them. All of the mats will include the title of the race, the date, and my time.

For special ones, like my race last week when I came in third, I will include where I placed and my gender/age group (since, you know, one day it may be “overall”). I also placed my medal – since, really, it’s not feasible to wear it to church on Sundays – in the document frame with that race’s bib.

I was very pleased with the way they turned out:

I’ll let you guess which was my favorite. Okay, okay. Yes, it was this one:

I picked up inexpensive document frame at Wal-mart for $2-3, but you could probably find them even cheaper at a dollar store or even keep an eye out for them at yard sales. I plan on hanging them on the wall in my home gym. I thought they’d make great incentive when I’m running on the treadmill.

Do you run? What do you do with your race bibs?

  1. You mean you don't think it would compliment your favorite outfits? Thanks for the giggle at the thought of you wearing the medal to church. You have so much to be proud of!
